Recently I became obsessed with faux leather leggings, and I went on the hunt for the perfect pair! Per usual, I asked for the opinions of my Instagram followers (because they always have the best tips and advice), and they did not disappoint! The overwhelming response was that the Spanx faux leather leggings are the best ones out there.
It didn't take me long to find these online (you can purchase these on the Spanx website or online at Nordstrom), but they are $100!!!! For a girl who buys her clothes at Target and Marshalls, I had a hard time accepting that price tag. $100 for a pair of leggings is a lot for me to take in and not how I want to spend my money (I mean, that's the price of my weekly groceries!). So I immediately began looking for a good knockoff pair.
Turns out, there are a lot of knockoffs out there! But it was important for me to find a pair with a good, realistic texture. There are a lot of faux leather materials that have a plastic aesthetic to them, but I like the variation in texture versus a high shine. There are a few pairs that accomplish this realistic look! I decided to go with Aerie's crackle & shine leggings. Based on online images, I thought that these looked most like the Spanx faux leather leggings, and they were half the price (which was still a stretch for me, but I really wanted them). Unfortunately, these are often sold out online! That's both good and bad because that means they are popular and are good quality, but bad because it's hard to get a pair for yourself! I ended up finding a pair in my size on Poshmark, an online resale website. But I was recently informed that they are restocked occasionally on the Aerie website (online only though).
And I ended up loving these leggings!!! They're cute, comfortable, and stylish. I was very happy with my decision to find a good knockoff rather than spending the money on the Spanx.
I took a girls' trip with one of my best friends, and she surprised me with a pair of Spanx faux leather leggings! Like, what?! What an amazing friend, right? I told her that it was too much, and she responded that she knew I wouldn't buy them for myself (very true) and that she loved her pair. So, I was able to really put them to the test and compare my Aerie knockoffs to the real deal Spanx brand!
I'll start off by saying that I love both! Each pair is stylish and very comfortable. And bonus: petite sizing is offered by these brands! This is great for shorter girls, like me, who benefit from a shorter length that petite sizing offers.
But neither of the pair are warm (like, at all). I wore each on chilly days in Florida, and I froze in both! So don't expect to wear these on colder days. They are better for spring or fall weather. In addition, the waistbands roll down on both of these brands. But I noticed that this only occurred when I was sitting for long periods of time (plane rides) or when I bent over. To me, this was not a nuisance, however I know that this is a deal breaker for many shoppers so I wanted to be sure to point it out. Many of my Instagram followers told me Spanx are the best because they don't roll, but that just wasn't the case for me.
The Aerie Crackle & Shine leggings are true to size and comfortable, however it is recommended to size up if purchasing the Spanx. The reason for this is that the compression on the Spanx is a little too much for comfort. After all, leggings are all about comfort! And as mentioned previously, the Aerie brand were only around $50 (and sales are much more common!) while the Spanx pair go for $100 with very rare discounts. You can reference the chart below for an easy-to-use comparison.
When l was visually comparing these two pairs side by side, the Spanx had a more realistic leather look... but then I decided to try on both pairs at the same time (one leg in each). It was a little weird, but they looked totally different when I was wearing them than when I had them set out before me (see pic below). When they were actually on my body, you could barely tell the difference between the two! I was shocked at how similar they appeared when just before they seemed very different. In the image below, the Aerie pair are on my left leg and the Spanx pair are on my right. I'll let you decided which aesthetic you prefer.
After taking in all of this info, my opinion is this: No, the Spanx are not worth the money. My main argument for this is that I like my knockoff leggings just as much, and they were only half the cost! That's a no-brainer decision for me. After expressing this to my Instagram followers, I asked their opinions. You can see the results in the image below. The overwhelming majority would save their money (like me) and go with the knockoffs!
Now it's time to make your decision. Which would you choose???
Because the Aerie crackle & shine leggings are difficult to find, I wanted to provide a different alternative. The pair below were also highly recommended to me, and they can be found on Amazon. I've seen the price on these fluctuate from $25-50, so you may be able to catch a great deal!
